Volunteering for MYCAT at Zoo Negara

Image
Well so yesterday I managed to drive all by myself alone to KUALA LUMPUR oh yeahhhh! Alhamdulillah... First, mum trusted me. Second, I got the wrong Cheras junction but I made sure mum didn't know. Third, I didn't turn on the radio at all. Pergi balik zikir all the way. Sebab takut sesat dan eksiden. Berguna. Ya, betul berguna. Zikir. Truth is, I really wanted to take public transport so I have time to write my 2015 resolutions while in the train. *********** I was happy. Very happy to be at the zoo. A lot of things has changed. The Education Department Office is no longer at the very end, it is now in the same building with the Customer Service Department. Went to the guard house, parked at the staff parking lot. Heh. Heh. I am afterall a volunteer... I assured myself. I was all ready to walk to the ol' Edu office but then I was stopped by En. Amin. Then I noticed the signage. Ohh... The dusty ol' library is now the office. Told him I did my interns...

MYCAT CAT Walk: THE WALK

Image
Part 3. The sooner I get it over with, the better. Because everyday is a new day and I don't want to be stuck in memories forever. (Whoa... Such a song lyric over there!)  THE WALK. CAT Walk stands for Citizen Action for Tigers Walk. At first I thought the purpose is only to find traces of poachers. But then Man explained that other than that, by doing this (jungle trekking), we are trying to show our presence to the poachers. Presence as in there are other people going in and out of the forest. So when there are people going in and out of the forest, this shows that they (illegal poachers) have a chance of being caught. Other than that, we also get to help MYCAT (Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers) check the camera traps. Hehe... There are camera traps in the forest too, okay... Hehe... One of the best experience started just that morning. We (Tita, Siddiq, Audrey, and I) got to sit at the back of the 4WD. The wind gushing, rushing, going against our face. Certainly...

MYCAT CAT WALK- The Inn

Image
Welcome to Speleo Inn! I didn't take a picture of the surrounding but the entrance was located at the back of a row of shops. Yes... At the back of a row of shops. Where there are chickens and basically at the same row of the other shops' back door. We stayed at Speleo Inn for RM 25 per person per night. It was a two-storey inn. The guys' dorm is downstairs and the ladies' is upstairs. Okay. One more thing. We shared the toilet. There is only ONE toilet. Well, there's another outside but I don't think that counts... Sharing a toilet is one thing, having to wrap up and bundle up to go to the toilet is another thing. Because sometimes you might bump into the guys at the small living room. Felt a bit jealous of the mat salleh's who can just wait for their turn wrapped in a towel. The stairs leading up to the ladies dorm is cool, though. Spiral stairs. Very adverture-sy. Haha! It really has the ADVENTURE, BACKPACKERS style. There were already fo...

MYCAT CAT Walk- The Journey to Merapoh

Image
And so, last weekend my best friend, Tita and I decided to go to Merapoh to save the tigers. Merapoh is in Pahang, by the way... In case you're like me; I really thought it's in Kelantan because it's near Gua Musang. Hopefully none of my lecturers are reading this... Such a shame for a tourism student! We joined a volunteering programme held by MYCAT (Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers). MYCAT is an NGO in Malaysia aiming to save tigers from poaching and extinction. They have various programmes but the one we joined was their CAT Walk. CAT is a cool abbreviation for Citizen Action for Tigers in which WE as normal people can actually help save the tigers! They said 'Orang Kelantan ada dimana-mana...' Oh yes. From Kajang to Putrajaya to Putra to Gombak, finally the bus was full. And yeah you guessed it right; kecek Kelate all the way! Tupe bah... Pecoh.. Cabe... Caghi bah dulu... Depe... (Tumpang bas, pecah, cabang/ simpang, cari bas dulu, depan). And Ti...

Being Angelina Jolie

Kalau bukan tentang bibir dia, mesti tentang kerja amal. If not because of her lips, it must be because of the many charity works that she has done.  I feel like Angelina Jolie.  For the second reason, though. I don't have lips like those... Well recently, I volunteered for WWF Malaysia (World Wide Fund for Nature). They were having an outreach for Orang Asli @ indigenous people in Malaysia and needed volunteers to assist them. I must say I'm not a newbie in volunteering but it was my first time volunteering for WWF. I've volunteered twice for MYCAT (Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers) before. So basically, I've volunteered only 3 times. Not Angelina Jolie enough, huh? Hahah... Unlike the outreaches conducted by MYCAT, this one by WWF was a tad different. Instead of approaching locals to give awareness on the wildlife, WWF organized an event for them while at the same time give awareness to them on the wildlife. A bigger challeng...
