Ala Dah Biasa

My mum said she didn't feel anything upon seeing me teaching swimming last week. "Tengok Tiah ajar berenang mak tak rasa apa pun" I thought what she meant was she already trusted me. But no. It's like this;   "Alaa, I've been there. I know how it feels."  Tak ada rasa apa-apa. I didn't get her point until I went swimming just now. I no longer have to be a lifeguard at the pool; I'm now just like you, have to pay 50 cent to enter and could only swim during ladies sessions. Oh yeah, now I'm free to go swimming. No need to duty. Heh. This is the first ticket I received in semester 1. Up til' now, I've only paid 4 times I think. For the past two semesters, masuk adalah percuma! :p Most of the lifeguards on duty were new lifeguards. Each one of them guarding one side. While I'm doing water treading at the deeper end, one of them paid close attention to me because the chances of drowning at the deeper end is hig...

Bronze Medallion Test

Image
Ini lifebuoy, bukan lifeguard. *lame joke* A blog reader asked me what exactly are the tests to get the Bronze Medallion certificate. So then, here goes. A blog post specially for that purpose. This was based on my own Bronze Medallion experience as I still haven't received the pictures of the test which was held last Saturday. Okay, let's start with training. I trained for 3 weeks, 8th to 26th June 2009. 5 times a week, 8 am to 5 pm. This was during my 4th semester break, that was why I can pulun habis-habisan for training. I trained with SMART . No, SMART doesn't stand for SMART Reader Kids (Like most of my friend thinks) ... Heh. SMART actually stands for Special Malaysia Rescue Team . They are the ones who go to those earthquake missions and things like that. Remember the Bukit Antarabangsa landslide? Yup, they helped around there too. I even saw a friend of mine on the news! *Proud* Training with those abang-abang bomba, abang-abang polis,...

Saving Lives oh Lifeguarding

Image
Someone nearly drowned at the pool! I was the lifeguard on duty last Thursday. I actually had aimed this one girl for quite some time. She was swimming laps and laps yet her stroke was incorrect. Her breaststroke leg movement was wrong as she pulled her legs too near to her abs. I was just wondering “Uissh…. Ni mau sakit pinggang ni..” but I didn't expect her to really stop! I was actually text messaging a friend saying today I could relax a bit since there were many lifeguards around. Push the button 'send' and then exactly at that exact moment the girl stopped swimming! She stopped and then turned to face me. Yes. Exactly right in front of me. Lane 2 . Both hands were already waving. Then one hand up. One hand down. One hand up one hand down. I only looked down at her from the lifeguard high chair. Then I saw her panic face. Turun tangga, turun tangga. Oh, there’s a kicking board. ( I took Hazri’s advice on always bringing a kicking board with you anywhere while on du...

Bukan Baywatch

Image
When I told people I'm a lifeguard, they would automatically say   "Oh... Macam Baywatch eh!"  And trust me guys, I know what you're thinking. And  imagining.  I'm only a swimming pool lifeguard. I don't go save people drowning in the sea. That, is what we call an  open water lifeguard .  And speaking of lifeguard, 30 people finally get themselves that title today. Yup, they passed the Bronze Medallion test. All of them! And 5 lifeguards actually achieved International Lifesaver. And... And... TWO other senior lifeguards achieved the Award of Merit! That was like the most ultimate super duper level, man!  *clap clap clap*  *clap clap clap* Okay... I really should have explain the lifeguard levels first, huh. Okay okay, there down here got picture meh. See? Award of Merit is like the highest, ultimate ever! I'm only an International Lifesaver... I hope to achieve Award of Merit before I graduated, though. Eheh. Once you get the Bronze ...

Cikgu Lifeguard

I'm trying to get myself a   lifeguard instructor  certificate. Okay to tell the truth I didn't intend to take that cert this soon (I'm only in the first semester... Like hello? I still got a long long way to go. ). But you see, I was given a chance. An opportunity . I felt really really really honoured because you see they actually chose to give me a chance. Budak part one yang masih baru ini. Uhuhuuu...  (Thanks Hazri!)  Well basically b ased on the fact that I always joined in their training and helped around willingly. Well basically because I love teaching so that's why I came to sibuk sibuk. For the past few months I've been teaching training teaching training my trainees to prepare them for the big test, the Bronze Medallion test. Which is exactly TOMORROW MORNING! Last night we had a pre-test . One of my trainees failed the chin-tow test. Her time was 3 mins 50 secs (It must be below 3 mins 15 secs) but I told her it was 3 mins 40 secs just to not let...

Flying in a pool of water...

Image
Lifeguarding can be a very boring job. Especially when you love water A LOT and all you can do is just watch people swimming. Basically, you are paid to watch. So today, as usual I brought along my notes to study by the poolside. Sambil kerja, sambil belajar. Well, because according to my past observations, the number of people swimming during this session never exceeds FIVE . So, it's really a bit relaxing, this session. All you've got to do is sit on this high chair and observe. But today things were a bit different. An athlete came swimming to this humble pool today. OH. I want that chest. A swimmers' chest. It's broad, tough, and triangular. Like Superman. I saw Raja at the pool today. No, not 'raja' as in king, but Raja Azlina Izzah , the swimmer. The national swimmer. I recognized her from the swimming suit. The same swimming suit she wore during the interfaculty swimming competition. Basically because there's MALAYSIA written on it. So she swims...
